"Linear" means linear routing, ie routing along lines. `highway=` + `area=yes` should only be used when omnidirectional area-cutting routing is needed. This doesn't seem to.
What "triangular" is being discussed? You should not remove lines inside, as they are needed for routing in both cases.

Unless you describe more clearly, or provide a photo, I don't know what you looked at. It has been changed twice to `=path` , and `=footway` before. It's the app and ultimately user's responsibility to use difficulties and life cycle.
